California Women Smoking Less

The percentage of women still smoking in California decreased to 9.1% in 2006 according to a recent report released by the California Department of Health Services. The percentage of all California adults, men and women, who are still smoking was 13.3% in 2006, a decrease from 24.9% in 1984. Unfortunately, smoking rates for young people, ages 18 to 24 increased from 18% in 2005 to 19.4% in 2006.

Another report, recently released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that smoking is not permitted in nearly three out of four U.S. households. The report is based on a national survey conducted mostly by telephone every two years. The survey covered 127,000 U.S. households in 2003 and looked at 900 to 7,000 homes in each state.

Participants were asked whether smoking was allowed everywhere in the home, only in some places, or not at all. Among households with at least one smoker, smoking was not permitted in 32 percent of the homes nationwide. Among households consisting of non-smokers, smoking was not permitted in 84% of the homes.

Recent surveys in local cities, including Santa Monica, Calabasas, and Los Angeles indicate that a majority of people who smoke are choosing to smoke outside, and that the number of households which do not allow smoking inside is comparable to the national percentage.
